Feger Turns Hell Into Heaven ... Wins UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Feature & Title At Attica

(Attica, OH) Jason Feger turned Attica Raceway Park’s victory lane into heaven Friday, July 16, as the Bloomington, Illinois driver took the win on night #26 of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals to claim the “Hell Tour” championship. It was Feger’s second win in just the last seven days of the tour and it came during his first ever visit to “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speedplant.

Feger unseats Dennis Erb Jr. as the Hell Tour Champion, as Erb has claimed the last three consecutive Summer Nationals titles. The High Side Hustler’s win came in dominating fashion as he led all 40 laps for the $5,000 prize. For the Summer Nationals, Feger has recorded 18 top five finishes, including a series-high seven second place showings.

“It sure feels good to finally dethrone that guy. This is definitely a tough deal and he’s a really tough competitor. If you’re going to do it that’s the way to do it right there,” said Feger beside his Pro Tire Automotive, Advanced Racing Suspensions, Stern Ironworks, Jaxon Chase Steel Detailing backed #25. “It will be nice going into tomorrow (Summer Nationals finale at Oakshade) without any pressure and just try to win a race and have a little fun.”

“Ever since we got this new motor in this car it’s been a rocket ship. It has some awesome horse power and I can’t thank Matt Rhyne at Rhyne Engines enough. My guys are the ones that have been keeping this thing together over this last month. It’s a tough deal with this many races over a short period of time (28 races over 32 days). They worked their butts off and they deserve this. This is awesome for Bob Pierce Race Cars,” continued Feger.

“This is my first time here…everybody told me this is a nice place and I’d love it and man they weren’t lying,” concluded Feger.

In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, D.J. Foos continued his hot streak, racing to his fourth consecutive feature win and fifth of the season at Attica . He held off challenges from Bobby Clark and Paul Weaver to claim his eighth career Attica victory on Smith Family Frosted Foods, Bazell Race Fuels, UUI Night.

“I got the last pill last tonight and it was the pole so things are just going our way,” said Foos beside his Burger King, Level Performance, Kistler Racing Products, Buck Shot Farms, R&R Used Cars, Pit Stop Carryout backed #11F. “When Bobby (Clark) passed me on the high side in one and two I thought okay he had a run on me up top so I figured I’d go up there and take his line away in three and four and it just worked out. I have to thank my mom and dad and grandpa…and everyone who helps out.”

In the Computer Man Dirt Trucks, Fostoria ’s Bob Dible raced side-by-side with Brian Arnold the last 12 laps before claiming his second feature win of the season.

“I think we’re finally back to where we ended last year with the set-up. I have to thank all my crew and the guys from the #8 (Steve Endicott) who help on this thing all week. It was fun racing with Brian, he’s such a good, clean racer,” said Dible beside his Bob’s Machine Shop, BMS Engines #17.

Jason Feger - UMP Late Models

In the 40-lap late model feature, Feger jumped into the lead from his outside front row starting spot with fourth place starter Jeep Van Wormer, Matt Miller and Brian Ruhlman in tow. The caution would fly on lap three for Keith Berner spin. On the restart the High Side Hustler jumped right back to the extreme high groove, which bordered on fast and disaster as Van Wormer tried to make a move on the bottom with Miller comfortably in third. Another caution for a tangle between Russ King, Jeff Babcock and Donnie Moran would again bunch up the field. Each time, Feger would blast into a commanding lead, leaving Van Wormer, Miller, Ruhlman and Jon Henry to fight for second. Another caution would fly on lap 7 for a Larry Kingseed spin with the running order Feger, Van Worker, Miller, Henry, Ruhlman, Doug Drown, Russ King and 15th place starter Dennis Erb Jr.

Feger again utilized the high line to pull away on the restart with Van Wormer pulling to his inside in turns one and two, but Feger was too strong up top in three and four. Another Kingseed spin on lap 14 would keep Feger in clean air and away from lapped traffic while Van Wormer, Miller, Henry and Erb followed. The final caution of the race would fly on lap 18 for a Babcock spin. On the restart, Feger had to deal with another bottom challenge from Van Wormer as Erb moved around Miller and challenge as well. Feger would begin to slowly pull away from Van Wormer, Erb, Miller and Henry. Miller would regain the third spot on lap 21 but could not close on Van Wormer.

Feger would set a blistering pace and hit lapped traffic just eight laps after the caution (lap 26). While Feger was mired in traffic, Van Wormer closed slightly with Miller, Erb, Ruhlman and Henry trying to keep pace. Patience was the key for Feger as he worked his way through the traffic, picking them off one by one. Feger averted disaster with two laps to go as he nearly jumped the narrow cushion, but his lead was just too big for Van Wormer to close. In fact, Feger lapped up to the eighth place car as he blasted to the checkered ahead of Van Wormer, Miller, Erb, and 19th place starter Jason McBride.

“I slid off the top there a little bit with two to go. I could see my brother on top the hauler telling me how much of a lead I had so I didn’t get too nervous and push it too hard. The top groove was definitely the spot to be and that’s where we’re the best at anyway,” said Feger.

D.J. Foos - 305 Sprints

In the 305 sprint feature, Foos jumped into the early lead with Bobby Clark, John Ivy, Zack Kramer, Stuart Brubaker and Paul Weaver in tow. Foos used the low groove to pull away slightly as Clark and Ivy battled for second. The caution would fly on lap three for Jimmy Colvin and a lap later he would spin again. Foos would pull away on the restarts with Clark, Ivy, Brubaker and Weaver battling for second. A caution on lap 7 for spins by Kramer and Nate Resser would find the running order of Foos, Clark, Ivy, Weaver and Brubaker. On the ensuing restart, Clark seemed to have found something on the top side of turns three and four, as he began to close on Foos. Another caution on lap 11 for Reeser would give Clark another opportunity.

But, Foos moved off the bottom into the top groove in turns three and four on the next restart, taking Clark ’s advantage away. Clark ’s challenge would end on lap 16 when he drove over the thin cushion in turn four, bringing out the yellow flag. Now Foos had to deal with defending track champion Paul Weaver, who was driving into the cushion like a man possessed, while Ivy was left to deal with Brubaker, Paige Polyak and Jake Trevino for the third spot.

With no more cautions in the race, Foos would continue to hit his marks while Weaver threw everything he had at the Fremont , Ohio youngster. Meanwhile, Polyak would drive around Brubaker into fourth on lap 10 and into third a lap later. Foos would take the checkered flag ahead of Weaver, Brubaker, who got around Polyak on the last lap, and 16th place starter Steve Rando.

Bob Dible - Dirt Trucks

Dwight Waltermeier would drive into the lead of the dirt truck feature with Dible, Jeff Wank, Brian Arnold and Alex Weichman in tow. Dible would drive under Waltermeier for the lead a lap later with Arnold taking third, just as the caution would fly for Jason Fought’s spin. On the restart, Arnold would drive under Waltermeier for second and began to race to Dible’s inside for the lead. The battle would be halted by back-to-back-to-back cautions. On each restart, Dible and Arnold would race side-by-side around the entire track. As the race went the remaining seven laps caution-free, Dible and Arnold would race door to door while Brian Sorg battled with Jeff Wank, Chuck Roelle, Steve Endicott and Weichman for third. Dible would take the checkered with Arnold right on his rear bumper and Endicott, Weichman and Art Ball rounding out the top five.

Attica Raceway Park will be back in action on Friday, July 23 on Quality Welding Night with the 410 sprints, UMP late models and 305 sprints. It is also a Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) point night for the 410 sprints and a FAST 305 Championship Series presented by Kear’s Speed Shop & Cleveland Golf night for the 305 sprints.
